Rangers, contrary to what one might think, are not the most able with bows. A fighter with 2 levels of ranger can achieve a greater mastery of bowmanship, especially an elf. The master of the bow is exquisite expert of bowmanship, able to do greater damage, achieve greater accuracy, with a bow, than any ranger can achieve.
There are sacrifices for this mastery. The master of the bow does not get ranger spells, nor ranger skills (as much) nor (most importantly) evasion. However, in return they get greater hit points, much greater damage delivery, and become death incarnate at range. Fear the master of the bow.
Further advancement of this archer should be in fighter and rogue classes. The rogue gives access to greater skills, enhancements for sneak attack, evasion and reflex saving throws, and of course, sneak attack damage. Fighter gives more hit points, keeps base attack bonus as high as possible, and allows concentration on feats and enhancements that improved the master’s defense against spells and melee combat.
