CCP has announced plans to phase out the current Classic Client for EVE Online in favor of a new system that could require users to upgrade for the first time in a decade. The dual-client nature of EVE Online in its current form allows players with more modern PC technology to enjoy spectacular graphics, while an older Classic Client allows the game to be played on pretty much any system from 1998 onwards. It's a great system for stubborn PC gamers who haven't seen the inside of an electronics store in 10 years, but not so much for CCP, who have to basically create all graphics twice every time they add something to the game. Not anymore.

If you haven't yet gotten a computer that can handle EVE Online's premium settings, you might want to hurry. According to CCP Zulupark over at the EVE Insider Dev Blog, the classic mode won't be around much longer. Raising the graphical bar has a number of benefits, says CCP. They include less testing, faster turnaround on fixes, and the ability to focus on one graphics engine, among other things. Once classic is out, they will go to "premium lite," which will use the same art assets that premium currently uses, but with less eye candy.

CCP has announced the release date of EVE Online: Apocrypha, the tenth free expansion of its science fiction MMO game. EVE Online is a large virtual universe where users pilot their spaceships around as they trade, fight, complete missions, or converse with other players. For the update, users can expect to see unpredicted wormholes opening up that will connect the player to unexplored regions of the universe. Inside these new areas players will find equipment which can be used to create Tech 3 modular ships, large customizable ships that can fill various roles from skirmish muscle to industrial support.

NPC agents in the expansion will be capable of assigning Epic Mission Arcs to pilots, missions that require the player to travel longer distances and interact with more adversaries. In addition, the game has modified the experience new players will receive in an attempt to help them grow and prosper within the universe.

Tenth EVE Online Expansion To Arrive in March

Evewp If you're at all interested in byzantine combat mechanics, a robust player-run economy, or blowing apart pretty spaceships, you might want to consider freeing up some time in your schedule around March 10. The ever-expanding sci-fi MMO EVE Online is set to receive its tenth expansion, dubbed EVE Online: Apocrypha. The launch date coincides with EVE's return to brick-and-mortar stores, courtesy of a partnership with Atari. In addition to introducing vast new tracts of explorable space via Wormholes, and modular, customizable ships, the developers at CCP will be revamping the New Player Experience, firing yet another salvo in their fight to convince the general public that there's quite a bit of fun to be had in EVE -- once you get past the treacherously steep learning curve. The official EVE wiki, EVElopedia, is also being touted as a resource to send new players off in the right direction, and the standing 14-day trial offer is always on hand, so the hesitant can at least see what all the fuss is about. Apocrypha will be free, like all of EVE's expansions, and will be available for the Windows, Mac, and Linux. If you're interested in MMOs and haven't yet fallen victim to the Lich King's cold embrace, you're seriously running out of reasons to not at least give EVE a shot.
